This position is located at the Fred LeRoy Health and Wellness Center and other sites as assigned. It is under the direct supervision of the Chief Dental Officer. This position requires professional licensure and competency in the field of dental hygiene.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • This employee is responsible for performing advanced prophylactic and preventative dental procedures in the treatment of patients with variety of oral health issues under the general supervision of a dentist..
  • Administer local anesthesia under the direct supervision of the dentist.
  • Record medical and dental histories, administer caries prevention agents, desensitizes root surfaces, root planing, sealant application, take and pour impressions for study cases, remove sutures, instruct patients in home care therapy along with proper diet, and coordinate recall patients.
  • Plan, coordinate and conduct community based dental prevention program, including collaboration with WIC, fluoride varnish program, health fairs, etc.
  • Develop and present oral health lectures, demonstration and visual displays to targeted population groups and provide in-service training to staff. Develop procedural guidelines to be used in the treatment of patients. Regularly provide input at clinic and dental staff meetings constructive to improving services.
  • Proctor dental hygiene students from local dental hygiene programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Relationships and Authority:

The employee has supervisory duties when assigned (i.e. dental hygiene students and supervisory provider of staff when the dentist is out of the office).

Working Environment and Physical Demands:

This position is located within an outpatient dental clinical setting. Employee will work throughout the dental area, sitting, standing, bending and lifting boxes of dental supplies weighing 50lbs or less. The work may be strenuous, fast paced and ever-changing. Work is subject to emotionally upset patients, family members, personnel and visitors.



  • Applicants must be currently licensed to practice as a dental hygienist and be licensed to administer local anesthetic in any state or territory of the United States and be in “good standing”
  • Must have attended a school accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and/or the American Dental Program.
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease and deformities of the teeth, jaw and oral cavity as it relates to the practice of dental hygiene.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of public health promotion/disease prevention concepts, practices and evaluation methods.
  • Ability to assist in managing a dental prevention program.
  • Ability and willingness to learn pertinent Dexis, Dentrix, RPMS, Word, Excel, and Power Point software application.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access programs.
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable.
  • Must successfully pass drug and alcohol testing, motor vehicle, education, character, and criminal background checks.
  • Able and willing to travel.


  • Ability to perform advanced oral prophylactic therapeutic and preventative procedures in cases of periodontal disease or inflammation or on patients with other medical or dental problems and developing oral health presentations for targeted groups.
  • Computer proficiency with Dentrix Enterprise, Dexis, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint programs.
  • Experience working with Native Americans or Native American organizations.
  • One or more years of experience as a licensed Registered Dental Hygienist in any state or US territory and in “good standing”.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Public Law 93-638: Indian Self Determination Act.

Preference will be given to Ponca Tribe of Nebraska members or members of a federally recognized tribe. However, all qualified individuals are eligible.

The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is an at-will employer.
